01 — Overview

Description

An inorganic iodide salt of potassium, supplying approximately 76 percent iodide by weight (calculated as I) and approximately 23 percent potassium. The dominant iodine source for universal salt iodization programs worldwide and a critical input for thyroid health and emergency radioprotection.

Colorless to white cubic crystals or fine crystalline powder, freely soluble in water with a slightly bitter saline taste. Hygroscopic and sensitive to light, requiring stabilization and protective packaging for long-term storage.

We supply food-grade, pharmaceutical-grade, and analytical-grade Potassium Iodide from manufacturers in China holding ISO, FSSC 22000, Halal, Kosher, and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include USP, EP, and BP pharmaceutical-grade for human supplement, parenteral, and radioprotection use, food-grade for salt iodization (typically as KIO3 or KI co-blended for stability), stabilized iodized salt premixes, infant formula fortification grade, and analytical-grade for laboratory use. Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments with batch-level COA covering assay, elemental iodine, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Iodine is an essential trace element required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine), which regulate basal metabolic rate, growth, and neurological development. Iodine deficiency remains the leading cause of preventable intellectual disability globally and is addressed through universal salt iodization programs supported by WHO, UNICEF, and ICCIDD.

Industrial production uses reaction of iodine with potassium hydroxide solution, with hydrogen peroxide added to convert the intermediate iodate back to iodide, followed by evaporation, crystallization, and drying under controlled atmosphere. Pharmaceutical grades are produced under strict heavy-metal control and packaged in light-protected, moisture-resistant containers.

Regulatory status includes USP, EP, JP, and BP monographs, authorization as food additive E917 in selected jurisdictions (with potassium iodate E917 more commonly used for salt iodization due to stability), recognition as a permitted iodine source under EU Regulation 1925/2006 and infant formula directives, GRAS notifications with FDA, and FDA approval as an over-the-counter radioprotection drug.

Bioavailability of iodide from potassium iodide is essentially complete (greater than 95 percent absorption), with the iodide ion absorbed by the thyroid sodium-iodide symporter and incorporated into thyroglobulin for hormone synthesis. Potassium iodate is the preferred form for salt iodization due to superior stability in humid tropical climates, while potassium iodide is the standard for pharmaceutical and supplement use.
