02 — Background

Introduction

Olive leaves have been used in Mediterranean traditional medicine for centuries for fevers, infections, and cardiovascular complaints. Modern pharmacological interest centers on oleuropein, the principal polyphenol responsible for the bitter taste of unripe olives and a major contributor to the health benefits attributed to Mediterranean diets.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water and ethanol extraction of dried Olive leaves, followed by chromatographic purification and standardization to defined oleuropein content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA (GRAS), the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.

The polyphenol has documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and ACE-inhibitory activities. Clinical evidence supports modest effects on blood pressure and cholesterol at appropriate doses (typically 500 to 1000 mg of standardized extract).

Strategic positioning combines immune-support dietary supplements (the consumer-facing application), cardiovascular and Mediterranean-positioning products, and natural antimicrobial preservatives.
