Introduction
Magnolia officinalis has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,500 years for digestive complaints, anxiety, and respiratory conditions. The bark is the primary medicinal part and contains characteristic biphenyl neolignans that distinguish it from ornamental Magnolia species.
Industrial production proceeds by ethanol extraction of dried Magnolia bark, followed by chromatographic purification to defined honokiol and magnolol content. High-purity individual compounds require additional crystallization steps.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and many other markets; subject to regulatory review in the EU under the Novel Food regulation.
Honokiol and magnolol have documented GABA-receptor modulation supporting the anxiolytic and sleep-support positioning, similar in mechanism (though milder) to pharmaceutical benzodiazepines. The compounds also have well-documented antimicrobial activity supporting oral-care applications.
