Introduction
Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable cultivated in the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia for over 2,000 years. The root grows above 4,000 meters elevation where few other crops thrive, and has been valued by indigenous Andean cultures for energy, fertility, and altitude-adaptation effects.
Industrial production proceeds by drying, milling, and optional gelatinization (heat treatment to improve digestibility) of fresh Maca roots. Concentrated extracts use additional hot-water and ethanol extraction steps.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA (GRAS), the European Food Safety Authority (where Maca is classified as a traditional food), and equivalent regulators worldwide.
The principal active compounds are the macamides and macaenes, novel benzylated fatty acid amides essentially unique to Maca. Clinical evidence supports modest benefits in sexual function and subjective energy in both men and women, with stronger evidence in postmenopausal women.
Strategic positioning combines sports nutrition energy supplements (the largest volume application), sexual-health products, and the broader adaptogenic superfood category.
