02 — Background

Introduction

Lotus has held cultural and medicinal significance across Asian civilizations for over 3,000 years. Lotus seeds have been used as both food and medicine for spleen-tonification, calming, and reproductive health applications.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried Lotus seeds, followed by purification and standardization. The seed embryo (lian zi xin) is a separate higher-alkaloid extract used for premium calming applications.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and several other markets.

The active compounds include polysaccharides, alkaloids (neferine, liensinine, isoliensinine), and flavonoids. Clinical evidence remains limited but traditional consumer demand supports established product segments.

Strategic positioning combines traditional Chinese medicine product formulations and modern calming-supplement applications.
