Introduction
Hovenia dulcis is a tree native to East Asia, with seeds and stems used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine for over 1,000 years specifically for managing excessive alcohol consumption. The plant's traditional name (zhi ju zi) translates approximately to 'sober up fruit'.
Industrial production proceeds by hydroalcoholic extraction of dried Hovenia seed and stem, followed by chromatographic purification to defined dihydromyricetin content. Higher-purity grades require additional purification steps and reflect substantial cost increases.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China, Korea, Japan, and many other markets; subject to ongoing regulatory consideration in the EU under the Novel Food regulation for high-purity DHM preparations.
Dihydromyricetin has emerged as the most clinically-studied natural compound for hangover-symptom reduction, with proposed mechanisms involving acceleration of alcohol metabolism through aldehyde dehydrogenase activation and GABA-receptor modulation. Multiple controlled trials support reduction in subjective hangover severity at appropriate doses.
Strategic positioning is dominated by the hangover-relief supplement category globally, a rapidly growing segment with substantial premium positioning support for clinically-studied actives.
