Introduction
Houttuynia cordata has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,500 years for heat-clearing, detoxification, and respiratory applications. The plant has a distinctive fishy aroma (the source of its English common name fish mint) that varies by chemotype.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried Houttuynia, followed by ethanol precipitation of polysaccharides, chromatographic purification, and spray-drying to defined polysaccharide content.
Recognized as a permitted traditional medicine and food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and several other markets.
The polysaccharide fraction has documented immunomodulatory activity in cell-culture and animal studies. The plant also contains flavonoids (quercitrin, hyperin) with anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities. Several Chinese clinical formulas containing Houttuynia were studied during the 2003 SARS outbreak and COVID-19 pandemic.
Strategic positioning combines traditional Chinese medicine product formulations, immune-support supplements, and respiratory-care applications.
