Introduction
Houttuynia cordata (yu xing cao, fishwort, dokudami in Japan) has been used in traditional medicine across China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia for centuries for respiratory complaints, urinary tract conditions, and skin disorders. The fresh herb is also consumed as a vegetable and salad ingredient in Vietnam, Thailand, and parts of southwestern China.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water or hydroethanolic extraction of dried aerial parts, followed by purification and spray-drying. The characteristic fishy odor of fresh material is largely lost in the dried extract.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in many international markets.
Modern research has identified antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities for Houttuynia extract. Houttuynin, the principal aldehyde, has documented antimicrobial activity against multiple bacterial and viral targets.
Strategic positioning combines Traditional Chinese Medicine and traditional Japanese medicine applications, modern immune and respiratory-support supplements, and use in cosmetic skincare leveraging the anti-inflammatory profile.
