02 — Background

Introduction

Holy Basil (Tulsi) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years and is considered sacred in Hindu tradition, with the plant traditionally grown in courtyards of Hindu households across India. The plant is one of the most extensively used herbs in Ayurveda and is classified as a rasayana (rejuvenative tonic) for promoting longevity.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water and ethanol extraction of dried Holy Basil leaves, followed by purification and standardization to defined ursolic acid content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.

Clinical evidence supports adaptogen positioning, with controlled trials showing benefits for cortisol modulation, perceived stress, and cognitive performance under stress at appropriate doses. The plant has a stronger Ayurvedic evidence base than Western clinical research, but Western trials have generally supported the traditional adaptogenic positioning.

Strategic positioning targets the growing adaptogen supplement market alongside Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, and Eleuthero, with premium positioning supported by the cultural significance and clean-label appeal of the Tulsi name.
