Introduction
Ginkgo biloba is among the oldest tree species on Earth, often called a living fossil because the species has remained essentially unchanged for over 200 million years. The leaves have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries; modern pharmaceutical-style standardization began in Germany in the 1960s with the development of the EGb 761 extract.
Industrial production proceeds by acetone-water extraction of dried Ginkgo leaves, followed by liquid-liquid partition steps to remove the allergenic ginkgolic acids, and standardization to the 24 percent flavone glycoside / 6 percent terpene lactone specification.
Regulated as a prescription herbal medicine in Germany and France and as a permitted food ingredient or traditional herbal medicine in the U.S., U.K., and most other markets. The European Medicines Agency has issued monographs supporting use for symptoms of mild dementia and peripheral arterial disease.
Clinical evidence for Ginkgo in mild cognitive impairment and dementia is mixed but supports modest cognitive benefit at the standardized 240 mg per day dose. The compound also has well-documented platelet-activating-factor antagonist activity, contributing to circulation-support claims.
