Introduction
Eucommia ulmoides has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years for kidney-yang and liver-yin tonification, bone and joint health, and pregnancy support. The plant is a small deciduous tree native to China and is the sole surviving species in the family Eucommiaceae.
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water and ethanol extraction of dried Eucommia bark, followed by purification and standardization to defined chlorogenic acid content.
Recognized as a permitted traditional medicine and food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement in the U.S. and several other markets.
The active compounds include chlorogenic acid (the principal polyphenol marker), lignans (pinoresinol diglucoside, geniposide), and gutta-percha latex. Clinical evidence for blood-pressure and bone-health applications is moderate, with the strongest support for blood-pressure endpoints.
Strategic positioning combines bone-health and kidney-tonification dietary supplements (the volume application), traditional Chinese medicine formulations, and cardiovascular-support products.
