02 — Background

Introduction

Wild chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 1,500 years for heat-clearing, detoxification, and eye-health applications. The herb is distinguished from the closely related Chrysanthemum morifolium (ju hua), which is also used medicinally but has different traditional indications.

Industrial production proceeds by hot-water and ethanol extraction of dried chrysanthemum flowers, followed by purification and standardization to defined flavonoid or chlorogenic acid content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in China and most Asian markets; sold as a dietary supplement or herbal tea ingredient in the U.S. and European markets.

The flavonoid and chlorogenic acid polyphenols have documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities supporting the traditional positioning claims.

Strategic positioning combines traditional Chinese medicine applications (the dominant Asian market) and functional beverage and supplement applications globally.
