01 — Overview

Description

The bitartrate salt form of choline, the preferred choline source for human dietary supplements and pharmaceutical applications. Distinct from Choline Chloride by significantly lower hygroscopicity and milder taste, supporting use in oral tablets and capsules without the fishy odor that choline chloride produces.

White to off-white crystalline powder. Less hygroscopic than Choline Chloride; suitable for tablet and capsule manufacturing without specialized humidity control.

We supply food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade Choline Bitartrate from manufacturers in China holding ISO, Halal, Kosher and other certifications relevant to the product and production.

Common market grades include Standard Food Grade, Pharmaceutical Grade meeting BP/USP/EP specifications, and pre-blended Choline Bitartrate with B-complex vitamins for cognitive-support supplement systems.

Bulk and reduced-MOQ shipments. Batch-level COA covering assay, moisture, heavy metals, and microbiology.

02 — Background

Introduction

Choline Bitartrate is the bitartrate salt of choline, produced by neutralization of choline base with tartaric acid. The salt form was developed specifically for human supplement applications where Choline Chloride's hygroscopicity and fishy odor make it impractical for direct consumer use.

Industrial production proceeds by reaction of choline base (produced from trimethylamine and ethylene oxide) with food-grade L-tartaric acid, followed by crystallization and drying.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Listed in BP, USP, and EP pharmacopoeias.

Choline content by mass is approximately 41 percent (versus 75 percent in Choline Chloride), reflecting the additional mass of the bitartrate counter-ion. Despite the lower active concentration, the bitartrate form is preferred for human supplements due to handling and sensory advantages.

Strategic positioning serves human dietary supplements and pharmaceutical applications specifically. Animal feed uses Choline Chloride almost exclusively due to cost; human supplements use Choline Bitartrate for handling and sensory reasons.
