The standardized extract of Green Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), the world's third most expensive spice by weight. Available as essential oil oleoresins (for flavor applications) and as standardized powder extracts (for supplement and traditional medicine applications). The principal aroma compounds are 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpinyl acetate.

Introduction
Cardamom has been cultivated and traded since at least 4,000 years ago, with documentary evidence from ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Indian sources. The spice has held continuous commercial importance through Greek, Roman, Arab, and European trade. Today the principal producing regions are India (Kerala), Guatemala, and Sri Lanka.
Industrial production splits by application. Flavor-grade extracts proceed by solvent extraction or supercritical CO2 extraction of dried cardamom pods to produce oleoresins concentrated in volatile aromatic compounds. Essential oils are produced by steam distillation. Supplement-grade powder extracts proceed by hydroalcoholic extraction with standardization to defined volatile oil or marker compound content.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA (GRAS), the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide. Listed as a traditional medicine in Ayurvedic, Unani, and several other traditional systems.
Clinical evidence supports traditional digestive-support and carminative applications, with limited but consistent evidence for mild blood-pressure effects and antimicrobial activity in oral and gut applications.
