Introduction
Burdock root has a long history in both Western herbal medicine (where it features in classical blood-purifying formulas) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (niu bang zi, used for respiratory and inflammatory conditions). The fresh root is also consumed as a vegetable in East Asian cuisine, particularly Japan (gobo).
Industrial production proceeds by hot-water extraction of dried, sliced burdock root, followed by concentration and either spray-drying for standard extracts or further purification for lignan-standardized or inulin-enriched fractions.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide as a traditional food source.
The lignan arctigenin has been studied for anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. Inulin-type fructans support prebiotic positioning consistent with established health claims for fructan ingredients.
Strategic positioning combines traditional herbal medicine products, detoxification and skin-health supplements, and emerging prebiotic and digestive-health applications.
