02 — Background

Introduction

Black sesame has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine for over 1,500 years for liver and kidney tonification, hair health, and longevity. The black-pigmented seed variety is preferred over white sesame for medicinal applications due to higher lignan content.

Industrial production proceeds by ethanol extraction of defatted black sesame seeds, followed by purification and standardization to defined sesamin content. Sesamin is the most abundant lignan in sesame and the principal marker compound.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.

The sesame lignans have documented antioxidant activity and have been studied for lipid metabolism and tocopherol bioavailability. Clinical evidence for hair-greying and traditional positioning claims remains limited but consumer demand supports growing market segments.

Strategic positioning combines traditional medicine applications (the established Asian market) and modern hair-health and anti-aging dietary supplements globally.
