Introduction
Magnolia bark (hou po) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years for digestive complaints, anxiety, and respiratory conditions. The bark is also used in Japanese Kampo medicine under the name koboku.
Industrial production proceeds by ethanol or hydroalcoholic extraction of dried Magnolia officinalis bark, followed by purification and standardization to defined magnolol and honokiol content. Higher-purity grades require chromatographic isolation steps.
Recognized as a permitted food ingredient in most jurisdictions; classified as Generally Recognized as Safe by Wrigley for chewing gum applications in the U.S. The compound has been the subject of substantial preclinical research over the past two decades.
Magnolol and honokiol are structurally similar bibenzyl lignans with overlapping but distinct biological activities. Both compounds have documented GABA-receptor modulating effects supporting the anxiolytic and sleep-support positioning, and both have antibacterial activity against oral pathogens supporting the oral-care positioning.
Strategic positioning targets stress-management and sleep-support supplements globally, with significant secondary applications in oral-care products and pharmaceutical research.
Where it is used
- Stress-management and cortisol-control dietary supplements (the dominant Western commercial application)
- Sleep-support and anxiety-relief formulations
- Oral-care products: anti-cavity chewing gum and breath-freshening formulations (magnolol has documented antibacterial activity against oral pathogens)
- Traditional Chinese Medicine: hou po formulations including Ban Xia Hou Po Tang
- Anti-inflammatory supplement formulations
- Pharmaceutical research applications including anxiety and oncology research
- Cosmetic skincare: anti-inflammatory and anti-aging formulations
