Description

The standardized extract of Banaba leaf (Lagerstroemia speciosa), a Southeast Asian medicinal tree. Standardized to corosolic acid content, the principal active triterpenoid responsible for blood-sugar-support activity. Used in diabetes-support and weight-management dietary supplements globally.

Introduction

Banaba has been used in traditional Filipino and Southeast Asian medicine for centuries for blood-sugar regulation, kidney complaints, and weight management. The plant is sometimes called 'plant insulin' in traditional Filipino medicine due to its observed blood-sugar effects.

Industrial production proceeds by ethanol or hydroalcoholic extraction of dried Banaba leaves, followed by purification and standardization to defined corosolic acid content.

Recognized as a permitted food ingredient by the U.S. FDA, the European Food Safety Authority, and equivalent regulators worldwide.

Corosolic acid acts on glucose transporter mechanisms with effects similar to but milder than pharmaceutical insulin sensitizers. Clinical evidence in humans includes several small randomized controlled trials showing modest reductions in fasting and post-prandial blood glucose at 10 to 32 mg corosolic acid per day, supporting the blood-sugar-management positioning.
